The Detroit Cristo Rey High School was the culmination of a dream and some diligent research. It came to be with an amazing conjuncture of community need, building availability, a proven educational model, and a can-do interest of the IHM Sisters and the Basilian Fathers.

Mary Fran was so happy and proud that the IHMs wanted to sponsor this project lending their name and legacy, and being actively involved with administration of the school. Mary’s love of Detroit was a strong influence in her support of Detroit Cristo Rey. She had spent her childhood in the city. The IHM Sisters had a long history in the Catholic Schools of Detroit. And the IHMs taught in the former Holy Redeemer School, now the home of Cristo Rey.

When Mary Fran’s life and work here in Detroit ended so prematurely in 2011, her family  decided to set up a memorial fund in Mary’s honor that would embrace her dream and sustain this amazing school that works.

Here’s how it works. The genius of the Detroit Cristo Rey High School is the work/study model. All students work 40 hours each month at some of the finest businesses and companies in metro Detroit. These mini internships not only provide the students with invaluable hands-on, real-world experience, but also cover two-thirds of their tuition and book expenses for the year.

It is our goal to award three MFG Scholarships each year to selected students from the Junior Class.  Each scholarship is designed to cover the remaining third of the tuition and book expenses for their senior year. It is our hope that these scholarships will enable the student’s families to begin setting aside moneys for the upcoming college expenses.

2015 PlaqueNine  scholarships have been granted to date. Each year teachers, administrators, and support staff are invited to join the nomination process. Candidates are reviewed by a Selection Committee who choose the three winners each year. Winners are announced in May at a final assembly of the entire student body.

We are committed to growing the scholarship fund in the hopes of granting at least three awards each year. We invite you to join us as a sustaining member of the fund. Please consider making a donation to the Mary Fran Gilleran IHM Scholarship Fund.

Detroit Cristo Rey is a 501c3 non-profit organization and your donation may be tax-deductible.
